If you are running a digital, technology or innovation-based company in Malaysia, you may have come across the term Malaysia Digital Status, also known as MD Status. MD Status is awarded by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to eligible companies that undertake approved digital activities or provide digital solutions in Malaysia.
For digital companies, MD Status can help strengthen business credibility, support growth opportunities and provide access to selected incentives, facilitation and ecosystem support. However, applying for MD Status is not just about filling in an online form. Companies must understand the eligibility requirements, prepare the correct documents and continue complying with MDEC’s conditions after approval.
This article explains what MD Status is, who may apply, and what businesses should prepare before submitting an application.
What is Malaysia Digital Status?
Malaysia Digital Status is a recognition awarded by MDEC to eligible companies involved in Malaysia’s digital economy. It is part of the Malaysia Digital initiative, which aims to position Malaysia as a preferred hub for digital businesses, technology companies and digital talent.
Companies with MD Status may gain access to certain benefits, facilitation and ecosystem support, subject to MDEC’s approval and applicable conditions. MD Status was introduced as the successor to the former MSC Malaysia Status.
Who Should Consider Applying for MD Status?
MD Status may be relevant for companies involved in digital activities such as:
- Software development
- Artificial intelligence
- Big data analytics
- Cybersecurity
- Blockchain
- Financial technology
- Cloud services
- Data centre-related activities
- Digital creative technology
- Internet of Things
- Robotics
- Automation
- Digital platforms
- Other technology-driven solutions
If your company’s core business involves developing, commercialising or providing digital products or services, MD Status may be worth considering. However, your eligibility depends on the company’s actual business activity and whether it falls within MDEC’s approved digital activities.
Key Conditions for MD Status Companies
Based on MDEC’s requirements, companies awarded MD Status must comply with certain conditions. These include:
1. Minimum Paid-Up Capital
The company must have a minimum paid-up capital of: RM1,000. This condition must be complied with upon the grant of MD Status and maintained thereafter.
2. Commencement of Approved Digital Activities
The company must commence operations and undertake the approved Malaysia Digital activities in Malaysia. This must generally be complied with within 12 months from the date MD Status is awarded and maintained thereafter.
3. Knowledge Workers
The company must employ at least: 2 full-time knowledge workers. These employees should be involved in the approved Malaysia Digital activities. The minimum average monthly base salary requirement is: RM5,000.
4. Operating Expenditure
The company must incur minimum annual operating expenditure of: RM50,000. This expenditure should relate to the approved Malaysia Digital activities.
What to Prepare Before Applying
Before applying for MD Status, companies should prepare their information properly. Common items to prepare may include:
- Company profile
- SSM company documents
- Details of shareholders and directors
- Business activity description
- Explanation of the company’s digital product, service or platform
- Business plan
- Financial projections
- Proposed hiring plan
- Existing or planned knowledge worker information
- Details of technology used
- Product screenshots, website links or system demo, where applicable
- Supporting documents requested by MDEC
A strong application should clearly explain what the company does, how the business is digital in nature and how the proposed activity contributes to Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.
Step-by-step Guide to MD Status Application
Step 1: Check Whether Your Activity Qualifies
Before applying, review whether your company’s business activity falls under approved Malaysia Digital activities. MDEC will look at what your company actually does and whether the activity is digital, technology-based or innovation-driven.

Step 2: Review Your Company Structure
Make sure your company details are properly updated with SSM.
This includes:
- Company name
- Business nature
- Shareholding structure
- Director information
- Registered address
- Paid-up capital
If your company has not been incorporated yet, you should set up the Sdn Bhd first before proceeding with the MD Status application.
Step 3: Prepare Business and Technology Information
Your application should explain your digital activity clearly. For example, you may need to describe:
- What product or service your company offers
- What technology is used
- Who your target customers are
- How your business generates revenue
- Whether the solution is already operating or still under development
- How the activity will be carried out in Malaysia
Avoid using vague descriptions such as “IT services” or “digital business” without explaining the actual activity.
Step 4: Prepare Financial and Hiring Plans
MDEC may review whether the company can meet the ongoing conditions after approval. Companies should therefore prepare:
- Operating expenditure estimates
- Hiring plan for knowledge workers
- Salary structure
- Business growth plan
- Revenue projection
- Timeline to commence Malaysia Digital activities
This is important because MD Status companies are expected to meet certain conditions within the required timeframe.
Step 5: Submit the Application Through the MDEC Portal
The MD Status application is submitted through MDEC’s Malaysia Digital application platform. Applicants should complete the required fields and upload the supporting documents requested in the system.

Step 6: Respond to MDEC Queries
After submission, MDEC may request clarification or additional documents. Common follow-up questions may relate to:
- Business activity
- Digital product or service
- Revenue model
- Shareholding structure
- Financial commitment
- Knowledge worker plan
- Supporting evidence of technology or operation
Responding clearly and promptly can help avoid unnecessary delays.
Step 7: Received Outcome and Maintain Compliance
If approved, the company will receive MD Status. However, approval is not the end of the process. The company must continue to comply with the applicable conditions, including paid-up capital, approved activities, knowledge worker and operating expenditure requirements.
Companies should keep proper records and monitor deadlines to avoid non-compliance issues later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Applying before confirming the business activity
Not every technology-related business automatically qualifies. Make sure your business activity fits within the approved Malaysia Digital activities before applying.
2. Providing a weak business description
A vague application may lead to more questions from MDEC. Explain the company’s product. technology, customers and revenue model clearly.
3. Not preparing a hiring plan
MD Status companies must meet knowledge worker requirements. If the company does not currently have the required employees, it should prepare a clear plan to meet the condition.
4. Assuming tax incentives are automatic
MD Status may allow companies to access certain incentives, but tax incentives are not automatically granted. Separate criteria, application and approval may apply.
5. Ignoring post-approval conditions
Companies must continue to maintain the required conditions after approval. Failure to comply may affect the company’s MD Status or incentive eligibility.
MD Status vs Tax Incentive: Are they the same?
No. MD Status and tax incentives are related, but they are not the same thing. MD Status is a recognition awarded to eligible digital companies. Tax incentives, on the other hand, may require a separate application and approval process.
This means a company may first need to obtain MD Status before applying for certain tax incentives, but obtaining MD Status does not automatically guarantee tax incentive approval. Companies should review the latest MDEC guidelines before planning based on tax benefits.
Is MD Status suitable for new companies?
MD Status may be suitable for new companies if they are genuinely undertaking approved digital activities and can meet the required conditions. However, new companies should carefully assess whether they can comply with the post-approval requirements, especially:
- Hiring at least two knowledge workers
- Meeting salary requirements
- Meeting annual operating expenditure requirements
- Commencing the approved digital activity within the required timeframe
If the company is still at an early idea stage, it may be better to prepare the business plan, product concept and financial projection first before applying.
Practical checklist before applying
Before submitting your MD Status application, check the following:
- Is your company incorporated in Malaysia?
- Is the company’s business activity digital or technology-based?
- Does the activity fall within the approved Malaysia Digital activities?
- Is your SSM business nature updated?
- Is your company profile ready?
- Is your business plan clear?
- Can you explain your technology or digital solution?
- Do you have financial projections?
- Can you meet the paid-up capital requirement?
- Can you meet the knowledge worker requirement?
- Can you meet the operating expenditure requirement?
- Are your supporting documents complete?
Preparing these items early can make the application process smoother.
MD Status can be valuable for digital companies looking to grow in Malaysia’s technology ecosystem. However, business owners should understand that the application requires proper planning, clear documentation and ongoing compliance.
